A Silver Lining 05.04.2011 The silver lining in the wet and cool weather is the diversity of flowers and abundance of color in Fugate Woods. Normally these delicate ephemeral beauties make a brief appearance, but Mother Nature is drawing out their dance. Trails have improved to be passable, but remain soft and muddy for hikers to consider. Last Sunday's guided walk for 20 hardy individuals revealed a shy and elusive Green Heron sheltering along the creek, an unusual sighting. The next two weeks should reveal the greatest flush of migrating birds, many on a journey from South America to the Arctic Circle. A quiet half-hour seated in the Gathering Grove with a good pair of binoculars will delight any spirited birder.
Weather permitting, Westview 3rd grades will have a field day in the woods May 6, and share in planting some Burr Oaks along the woods periphery.
Fugate Woods Nature Preserve is closed to the public Mother's Day.
